Amateur Theatre

The ideology behind Serpentine Drama is to produce new smaller amateur theatre productions which are specifically designed to our tour. We exclusively produce new works which are written local playwrights and our deliberate policy is to have plays in both English and the Shetland dialect. In each case a contemporary take on both the issues and the language is a vital component of what we are lokking for in the new writing. By doing this we will offer audiences a view of Shetland and the world which reflects the realities of the 21st century.

The group was launched in 2004 and in that time we have toured throughout Shetland and we have also participated in the Shetland County Drama festival in March 2006.

The future plans include a joint community production with Shetland Arts and a brand new adaption of Charles Dickens classic tale of A Christmas Carol.

“Whit´s Ahint”

Sisters Nicky and Viv have just returned from their older sister´s hen night. They decide to take a photograph to capture the moment. 16 years later, Liz and her daughter discover the photograph and we learn more of what happened once the shutter closed. The moment captured in the photograph has huge repercussions for the family and the sisters reveal the dark secret that has been hidden bihind the walls of their home for so many years.

The play is written in Shetland dialect. It is a full length version of a one-act play by Jacqueline entitled Crack in Da Waa which was performed in 2003. The production also features a song commissioned to accompany the piece by Shetland band Shoormal.
