National Theatre

The story of this group starts in a Lithuanian closter. 

Centuries ago this closter was so holy that nobody was allowed to speak. The monks spent their days praying and contemplating in silence. The only words they ever uttered were “memento mori” – remember that yoy will die. 

Years later members from two icelandic amateur theatre companies visited this closter and the story about the monks only allawed to speak the word “Memento mori” was stuck in their minds.

A few days later the group gathered around a bottle og vodka and the expperience in the closter was discussed. And the conversation took different directions … What if you cannot die? What if you live forever? And so on …it was obviously worth rememberig that we mortals.

The night was still young when they realized that this was material for theatre !!

How is being immortal? To live forever? 

This evening the group made a packt as the first step. The director Ágústa Skúladóttir decided to join the group. In fall 2004 an audision was held, four actors from each of the two companies were chosen and rehersals started.

Hrefna Friðriksdóttir wrote the script after numerous improvisational experiments with the group.

The was on stage first time in november 2004. In summer 2005 they took part in a theatre festival in Akureyri, where Memento Mori was granted the honour af being chosen as the best play of the festival. Ágústa was chosen the best director and one of the group the best actress.

And now this group of devoted theatre lovers hope to cast a spell on you.
