A Play Drama in Music – or the other way ’round---

Normally – or almost as a rule – the music in a play creates atmosphere; it is used to illustrate, emphasize or comment upon that which takes place on the stage.

In ”Harpuríma”, however, the music has the same status as the text and is used directly to tell the story. Approximately half of the characters in the play are instruments – i.e. actors, who use instruments to communicate – or perhaps it is the instruments that use the actors to illustrate…

The play is an attempt to weave together two contrasting branches of art, so that both have equal status on the stage and complement each other.  ”Harpuríma” is not a musical, but rather, perhaps, an attempt to interpret the term ”musical” in a new way.

The play is also a journey through the theater.  Rather than having the stage sets changed, the audience is forced to move (and perhaps, also, move their own limits) through some of the darker corners in the theater.

The plot of the play is not a nice fairy tale; it is essentially a good old-fashioned horror story about love, jealousy, truth, lies, evil and, perhaps, justice.

Contrasts meet – and around music.
